With just one run allowed in his last 15.2 innings, a span that stretches over six games and nearly three weeks, Josh Collmenter has lowered his ERA to 2.75 this season. By becoming Mr. Extra Innings and a reliever who can throw up to four frames out of the bullpen, he’s also become an invaluable member of the Arizona pitching staff.
Baseball people understand how rare a quality that versatility is. This is what longtime reliever and fellow Diamondback (and Michigan native) J.J. Putz had to say about Collmenter to the Arizona Republic:
“I think he’s pretty much invaluable to a bullpen,” reliever J.J. Putz said. “He can come in and clean up an inning, get you out of trouble or come in during rain delays and throw five or six innings. He’s definitely preserved a lot of other arms out there.”
Arizona media has also taken notice. Here are a pair of articles this week on Collmenter, from the Republic and a Diamondbacks blog called Venom Strikes. The latter includes an awesome headline: My Love Letter To Josh Collmenter.
